About Us

Helderberg Alpacas is a family-owned farm. We
know what it’s like to juggle raising a family with
farm responsibilities and full-time jobs! We understand the need for manageable tasks and
a manageable budget while managing your household and working toward a dream! Since
we’ve been there (and still are), we can help you
get started with your own dream.

Becoming an alpaca farmer is a big decision and a big commitment; but once we were convinced this was our future, we took that first step forward and never looked back.

As a new farmer, you can grow your herd at your own pace, with the help of a supportive industry that easily accommodates farms of any size. Marketing the fiber of these beautiful animals is also made as easy as possible – with well-organized fiber cooperatives, a network of fiber mills, and sources of finished products.

We also raise and sell a variety of other small animals, including Guinea fowl, peacocks, and pygmy goats. The entire family participates in the care of these animals, and shares the rewards! We’ve invested in the Guinea fowl because they eat deer ticks – a disease-carrying pest in New York State and elsewhere - and help control bugs around the farm and gardens.  The pygmy goats are raised as pets, as an additional draw for farm visitors, and for sale to the community.

About Alpacas

Alpacas are gentle, curious members of the camelid family, producing luxurious fiber for use in textiles, crafts and art.  They are related to llamas, very similar in appearance, but about half the size.  Their fiber is softer and warmer than sheep's wool, and has become very popular among spinners and weavers.  Alpacas are sometimes used as pets, and as companion animals for other herding species.  They have also become frequent visitors to assisted living facilities, schools, and community gatherings.
